Today, I would like to share some facts about the effects of Ultraviolet light and Blue light on our eyes. These facts are based on research studies, scientific journals and as per my experience as an Optometrist (an eye care provider).
Visible light (the light which is visible to us like violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red) cover the wavelength of 380nm to 780nm and beyond the visible light which has shorter or greater wavelength, isn’t visible.
Ultraviolet (UV) light falls just beyond the shorter end of visible light. So, it’s invisible to the human eye. The Ultraviolet light has three zones:
So UV light has a degenerative effect on our eyes, particularly conjunctiva, cornea and the lens. In conjunctiva, it can cause a degenerative change as Pterygium and Pinguicula.
Prolonged exposure of UV light to the cornea can lead to exposure Keratitis (a corneal disorder), in which permanent degenerative change occurs to the cornea.
Because the lens of our eye absorbs the maximum UV light and protect our retina so UV light absorption by lens contributes the formation of cataract.
Benefits of Blue Light
Blue light in the range of 465 nm (nanometer) to 495 nm is good and essential for our health. This is the range of blue-turquoise light which is essential for the regulation of pupil size of our eyes.
It also helps to regulate Circadian sleep/wake cycle. So blue light in general can have health effects on vision as well as the body, and it is this blue-turquoise light that tends to have these beneficial effects.
Inadequate light exposure means inadequate blue-turquoise light, which can throw off our Circadian biological clock and our sleep/wake cycle. So this blue-turquoise light really plays a vital role in the general health of the individual. According to Review of optometry

It is found in a research study by Essilor and Paris Vision Institute in 2008 by splitting the visible light into multiple bands of 10 nm and each band was then focused on porcine retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells for several hours,that a specific band of blue light was identified to be at 415nm to 455nm is most harmful to the retina.

Nowadays, it is impossible to escape from the digital devices and modern lighting such as CFL bulbs, LED lights. These devices emit a significant amount of blue light. Blue light filter computer glasses helps to prevent from harmful blue light.

Blue light has a shorter wavelength and due to this property blue light scatters more easily than other visible light. This higher degree of scattering of these rays is what makes a cloudless sky look blue.

Anyone who spends more than two hours a day in front of the computer screen is likely to experience some degree of CVS. Those with refractive errors, binocular vision problems, focusing disorders, dry eye disease, etc., are likely to develop symptoms of CVS.
Some Facts on Computer Vision Syndrome-CVS:
- Computer Vision Syndrome-CVS holds the distinction of being called the number one occupational hazard of 21st(American optometrist association,2014)
- About 88% of all computer users will develop CVS at some time in their lives.(National institute of occupational safety and health,2009)
- Operating a computer may lead to visual, muscular or mental fatigue(occupational safety and health administration,2004)
- CVS affects productivity by 4-19%.(UAB,2010)
The main cause of Computer Vision Syndrome-CVS is prolonged hours of computer use.
- Environmental Factors: Temperature, chemicals, ventilation fans and ergonomics are some of the environmental factors that can predispose one to develop CVS.
- Reduced blink rate: The normal blink rate in most individuals is 10-16 times / minute. Studies have shown that the blink rate during computer use is significantly less than the normal. A reduced blink rate reduces the stability of the tear film and hence a poor tear film quality that can predispose one to develop CVS.
- Increased exposure: The reading of text on paper is normally performed while looking downwards. This results in the eyelid covering a substantial portion of the anterior surface of the eye, thus minimizing the evaporation of tears. On the contrary, computer users usually view their reading material in a horizontal gaze. This result in a wider palpebral fissure and an increased surface area exposed to the effects of evaporation.
- Sex: The prevalence of dry eye is slightly greater in females than males.
- Systemic Diseases: Computer Vision Syndrome-CVS is associated with various systemic diseases. A general review of the patient’s entire medical history aids in establishing a complete diagnosis. Autoimmune diseases such as Sjogren syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis have an association with CVS.
- Systemic medications: There are several systemic medications contributing to dry eyes. The most prevalent medications include diuretics, anti-histamines, psychotropic, and anti-hypertensive.
- Ocular conditions: Localized dysfunction of glands, which produce the ocular tear film, can also contribute to dry eye. The most common disorder, anterior Blepharitis, is an inflammation of the eyelids, affecting the Meibomian glands that secrete the lipid layer of the ocular surface. The lack of an adequate lipid layer contributes to rapid evaporation of the water component of the tear film that can predispose one to develop CVS.
- Cosmetics: Poorly applied cosmetics can block the openings of the oil secreting meibomian glands. This in turn contributes to a rapid evaporation of the water component of the tear film.
- Contact lenses: Computer users suffer more ocular and vision disturbance if they are contact lens users.
Common symptoms include:
Difficulty in reading/writing, even with reading glasses, if any.
- Blurred vision
- Double vision
- Discomfort with light
- Eye fatigue/eye ache
- Redness, watering of eyes
- Itching, burning eyes
- Neck/shoulder pain
Evaluation of Computer Vision Syndrome-CVS:
Various tests need to be performed by specialized eye care personnel for complete evaluation of CVS. Some of the important groups of tests are:
- Eye power check-up
- Tests for muscle balance
- Accommodation facility tests
- Tests for binocular vision
- Tears function tests: Schirmer’s test
- Ergonomic evaluation: This is one of the most important factors that contribute to develop CVS. It is all about how is our workplace. Is the workstation ergonomically appropriate?
As we know, prevention is always better than cure. There are a few important tips which help you to manage your Computer Vision Syndrome-CVS during prolonged hours of computer use:

The presence of even minor vision problems can often significantly affect worker comfort and performance at a computer.

All computer workers should have a comprehensive eye examination prior to or soon after beginning computer work and periodically thereafter.
- Cleaning of the computer screen:
Most computers will build up an electrostatic charge in the vicinity of the screen surface. Static charges can cause the attraction and accumulation of dust and other airborne particles on the face of the computer screen.
Although there is no conclusive evidence, it has been suggested that these charges may be related to the development of skin rash or eye irritation in some very sensitive people. This problem can usually be managed by cleaning the computer screen regularly.
- Tear Function Test: How to read the results of the Schirmer’s test:
- Normal which is ≥15 mm wetting of the paper after 5 minutes.
- Mild which is14-9 mm wetting of the paper after 5 minutes.
- Moderate this is 8-4 mm wetting of the paper after 5 minutes
- Severe which is <4 mm wetting of the paper after 5 minutes.
- Artificial tears medications: Use a lubricating eye drop to moisten the corneal surface when the schirmer’s test results not normal.
- Proper lighting at the workplace: Reflected glare from windows and lighting should be avoided. Anti glare screens may help.

Advice to blink frequently: This re-wets the cornea and helps prevent dryness and irritation.
- Follow 20/20/20 rule– After every 20 minutes of computer viewing, one should look into the distance 20 feet away for 20 seconds to allow the eyes to refocus. The American Optometric Association suggests a break of 15 minutes after 2 hours of continuous computer use.
- Follow the 007 rule:
Character height should be 0.007 times viewing distance to be legible.
For example: For 20 inch viewing distance, 007 rules say that minimum character height is 0.14 inches (0.007×20”=0.14”). Therefore, 12 point type at 20” viewing distance satisfies the 007 rule.
